Admiral Nelson

Review

The Admiral Nelson is a large English country pub restaurant which is situated next to the Admiral Nelson Lock on the Oxford Canal in Braunston, Northamptonshire. It is a popular venue for narrow boat owners and also attracts visitors from all over. However a bit of signage would be beneficial as there is no indication from the main road through Braunston that the pub exists.

The pub has changed hands a few times over the years and has been under new management since September 2010. Unfortunately I was unable to find out who the latest licensee/manager is.

The food served and service provided is of a good standard and the prices are affordable, but don’t expect Silver Service otherwise you will be disappointed.

The main attractions are the lock and the many narrow boats which frequent it in the Spring to Autumn period as well as the fine selection of real ales on offer, which can be enjoyed sitting outside in the beer garden watching the said boats. The pub isn’t, at the time of writing, CAMRA listed which is surprising. CAMRA Rugby list it in their pub guide, but very little information is provided.

All in all it is a great place to visit for all the family and a welcome stop on the way along the Oxford Canal, whether by boat or on foot.
